Hanspeter Liniger

Since 1990 Hans has been with the “Centre for Development and Environment” (CDE) of the University of Bern building collaborative postgraduate training programmes with the University of Nairobi (Dept. of Agricultural Engineering, Soil Science, Crop Science, Geography and Meteorology) and coordination of the ecological part of the Laikipia Research Programme. 

Since 1993 Hans has served as the Coordinator and director of the global WOCAT (World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies) network: Founding member during the launch of WOCAT as a global programme in 1992 by CDE and the World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWC). In collaboration with over 50 international and national institutions worldwide, a methodology for the documentation, evaluation and dissemination of successful SWC practices has been established.  As Coordinator (till June 2014) and Director of WOCAT several strong partnerships were developed including with United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD; DesertNet International (DNI) and the Global Network of Dryland Research Institutes (GNDRI) and DRYNET. As a result, WOCAT has been nominated by UNCCD to be its primary recommended database for best practices on Sustainable Land Management (SLM).
